Working Lionel #282 Portal Gantry Crane With Controller Picture(s) and Description:

The 282 Portal Gantry Crane was available for four years (1954-1957). In only the second year of production, 1955, Lionel re-designed the internal mechanical components. This internal change resulted in two different cranes, an early version -- referred to as a 282 crane -- and a later version, commonly referred to as the 282R. This auction is for the Lionel 282 portal gantry crane that was available 1954-1955. This item has been tested and works. While packaging, one of the wires came loose. A drop of soldier on the end of the wire is all that is needed for the connection. I have now taped it and figured I would leave it up to the new owner whether to soldier it or leave this item original. This crane has the following features: a gray support structure with a gray top plate, a black cab with white letters that is screw mounted to the red rotating base, a black glued-in smokestack, a black three-lever control base, plus an electro-magnet on the hook of the crane. It is designed to span a single track. Although Lionel did not create a rail specifically for the feet of the 282 crane, you can easily customize a single rail of track to be used as the base of the accessory.
